Commencement, Community, and Change

Dear Family and Friends,

The laughter of cherished memories has faded, and the tears of parting have fallen. The hats and gowns have been traded for shorts and graphic tees as summer begins, as we get to enjoy a well-earned break before the next chapter unfolds. With the recent release of the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, I’m reminded of his iconic song,The Times They Are A-Changin,’ a fitting anthem for the journey ahead.

The Class of 2025 stands apart—not just for your achievements but for the remarkable resilience you’ve shown. You began the academic journey in the shadow of a global pandemic, facing uncertainty ahead that none of us know. And yet, you adapted. You persevered. You thrived. If you can overcome those unprecedented challenges, the road ahead will not be filled with obstacles but opportunities.

I find that this season of celebration and reconnection. as alums return to relive their time on campus, reminds us of the powerful community we share. As we embrace this moment of transition, we also say goodbye to a cherished MSE family member: Pat Overend, Director of Administrative and Academic Services. Pat’s dedication and impact on the Department of Materials Science and Engineering have been profound. Her legacy of excellence will continue to guide and inspire us.

In this same spirit of change, we warmly welcome Dorilona Rose as our new Director of Administrative and Academic Services. Dorilona brings extensive experience and a fresh perspective that will strengthen our department and support our students in new and meaningful ways.

Through every transition, our mission endures: to prepare and empower students with knowledge, integrity, and compassion. You, our graduates, are the living embodiment of that mission. As you step forward into careers, graduate study, or other new ventures, carry these values with you.

Congratulations on your graduation. Enjoy your summer, make memories, seek out new experiences—and continue to challenge yourself as you move forward with courage and purpose.
